More or Less: DIY bubble chandelier won't burst the bank
- The San Francisco Chronicle, 07/19/2009

Chandeliers are the design equivalent of sweeping dust under the rug: Even in a lackluster room, a dramatic light fixture will center the space and distract the eye.
But if the classic chandelier, with its layer cake of crystals, feels too fussy for you, there are plenty of simpler, modern alternatives:

The 9-Globe Bubble Chandelier by Lindsey Adelman, for example, is breathtaking without being baroque. As the name implies, nine hand-blown glass orbs, which can be custom designed with murrine and gold foil patterns, branch off a metal finish in nickel, bronze or brass (gold is also an option, by special request).

The Bubble Chandelier retails for $14,400 at Ten Over Six, a Los Angeles boutique, and Matter, a New York design store, but orders can also be placed directly with Lindsey Adelman Studio in Brooklyn, N.Y., where the chandelier is assembled and shipped by UPS Ground service for an extra $350.

But if that's more than you'll pay for some drama over your dining table, consider this: Jean Pelle, another Brooklyn designer, has created a Bubble Chandelier as a do-it-yourself project for ReadyMade, a crafts and lifestyle magazine. She now sells the lamp online for $300.

"For most designer chandeliers and lamps, there are so many markups from manufacturer to retailer that it gets to be really unaffordable," said Pelle.

Making a chandelier isn't as hard as it seems, Pelle insists. She designed her Bubble Chandelier using glass Bubble Balls sold at CB2 for $1.95 to $3.95, along with plastic rods, rope, cotton string and wiring that she bought at her local hardware store and Lowe's. The total cost of materials, she estimates, is $75.

Recently, Pelle began selling the Bubble Chandelier fully assembled through her online Etsy shop ( for $300 - but the DIY instructions for ReadyMade remain posted on her Web site,

"I get really excited when I see other people make it," said Pelle. "That's what I intended it for."
