Lamps drum up industrial style
- The San Francisco Chronicle, 02/21/2010

We say: When designing your home, don't be afraid to march to the beat of a different drum.

And when it comes to drum pendant lamps, the same applies. Although circular frames connected by cloth typically define this style of lighting, other options abound. And if you dig the industrial look, as we do, you might try something with a little more metal.

The "rough luxe" lover in us instantly fell for the Aldercy Pendant, which is sold at Ballard Designs for $329 (ballarddesigns.com). The circular, brass shade has a hand-applied silver finish that gives it a timeworn look. The shade is 16 inches in diameter, with a 5.3-inch hanging chain with unadorned, wide metal loops. The manufacturer recommends installing a lightbulb of no more than 60 watts.

If you prefer something sleek and streamlined, you might try the Pulley Pendant Lamp from CB2 (cb2.com) for $199. The height of the pewtered steel shade can be adjusted with a silver counterweight and pulley system on a black cloth cord. The shade is 17 inches in diameter, with a cord 15 to 89 inches long. The fixture is compatible with compact fluorescent bulbs, though a maximum of 100 watts is recommended.

Face it: You can't beat these lamps for style.
